Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
