The Global Health Body Issues Concern Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Injections

Under 10% of individuals that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to widespread availability to the treatments that can help people shift substantial body mass, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the current best projected outlook, the supply of such drugs could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to expand availability, by approaches including licensing agreements.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

These medications mimick a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so users reduce food intake.

Patients typically see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of stopping the medication, as their usual food cravings return.

Being overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for experiencing health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in all nations and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
